Writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) is a usual procedure for any organization with a quality manage system. However, also an increasing number of labs in biomedical research are seeing advantages of standardized protocols. Susanne Hollmann and colleagues published “ten simple rules” on writing SOPs and their maintenance. This article provides very good guidance for any research laboratory to start writing their own procedures and achieve increased standardization in documents. Even though one might not want to follow the rules point-by-point, they show how to start and what to consider. At least, it might stimulate the standardization of a common layout and structure within one laboratory.
